Hospital Readmissions - Not All Bad

If you die, you can't come back. Not all hospital readmissions are bad.      

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) view hospital readmissions as a sign of poor care. Cleveland Clinic researchers who studied readmission among heart failure patients say in letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, that some readmissions indicate successful care. They suggest the relationship between readmission and mortality rates needs examination.

Starting in October, 2013, CMS will consider mortality rates among the quality measures used in calculating hospital reimbursement.
