"Learning to Listen,” a New York Times story by Gina Kolata, describes an innovative program that began in 2009 at Columbia University: a Master of Science in narrative medicine. The idea is that understanding literature, and the way stories are assembled and told, can help physicians, nurses and other care-givers in their professional and human relationships with patients. Sayantani Das Gupta, MD, MPH, a narrative medicine scholar and practicing physician, and Craig Irvine, PhD, a scholar of philosophy and ethics, are faculty members. They discuss their inspiring experiences with the stories and the students in a February 4, 2011 PlexusCall: Narrative Medicine (bottom of the page).
