A dying nurse offers herself as a lesson in caring
Martha Keochareon, who had survived an improbable six years with pancreatic
realized she was approaching
death, she offered herself as a case study for nursing students.
She had been a nurse herself, so she called
her alma mater, the Holyoke
Community College nursing
school, with an invitation for students to come her home and ask her anything they wanted to know
about pancreatic cancer and the experience of facing pain and death. A
New York Times story by Abby Goodnough tells about Keochareon's generous
gift and what the student nurses learned.
