AHRQ: 40 percent cut in blood stream infections saves 500 lives and $34 million

2,000 infections prevented, 500 lives saved 

Preliminary findings of nationwide patient safety project to reduce central-line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) shows that a 40 percent reduction of these infections in 1,100 adult intensive care units saved more than $34 million in healthcare costs. The AHRQ, which funded the project, and its project partners, the American Hospital Association and Johns Hopkins Medicine, used the Comprehensive Unit-Based Safety Program (CUSP). AHRQ reports the project prevented 2,000 CLABIs and saved 500 lives.
