Description:
The capacity of human systems to change and improve is shaped by the quality of relationships among its members. Ruth Anderson
Plexus Institute and the Plexus Complexity and Nursing Network are joining forces to sponsor a workshop devoted to complexity and nursing. The event will celebrate and feature the publication of the book - On the Edge: Nursing in the Age of Complexity. This book is a “product” of the Nursing Network and the Plexus scientific community.
The conference will be organized around the content of the book and many book chapter authors will serve as faculty for an interactive, Plexus-style learning event. As you can see from the listing of the book chapters below, explorations at the conference will range across the many implications of complexity science for nursing practice, education, leadership, research and policy.
- Nursing in a Complex Environment and the Challenge of Making Change, by Marge Wiggins, Vice President of Nursing, Maine Medical Center
- Complexity Science Concepts and Principles: A Primer, by Claire Lindberg, Professor, School of Nursing, The College of New Jersey, and Curt Lindberg, President, Plexus Institute
- Nursing Research and Complexity, by Ruth Anderson, Duke University School of Nursing
- Complexity and Uncertainty in Physiologic Networks, by Bruce West, Senior Research Scientist, U.S. Army Research Office
- Family as a Complex System, by Sue Nash, Associate Professor, Augsburg College School of Nursing
- Complexity Science and Nursing Theory, Mary Gambino, University of Kansas School of Nursing
- The Art, Science and Complexity of Clinical Reasoning, by Daniel J. Pesut, Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Indiana University School of Nursing
- Positioning Nursing for Leadership in a Complex Healthcare System, by James W. Begun, Division of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, and Kenneth R. White, Department of Health Administration, Virginia Commonwealth University
- Nursing and Health Policy: A Complexity Inspired Approach to Viewing the Role of Nurses in Impacting National and International Issues, by Brenda Zimmerman, Director of the Health Industry Management Program, Schulich School of Business, York University, and San Ng, Department of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation, University of Toronto
- Complexity and Nursing Education, by Tona Leiker, Dean, School of Adult and Graduate Studies, and Claire Lindberg, Professor, School of Nursing, The College of New Jersey

The workshop design will feature engaging presentations by leading authorities in complexity science and nursing, small group breakout sessions and conversations to explore implications of complexity science for nursing, opportunities for participants to self-organize around topics of special interest, and many chances to build and strengthen relationships with those who share an interest in how complexity can contribute to the advancement of nursing.
This educational offering is approved for 15 contact hours applicable for RN, LPN, or LMHT relicensure.
While this event will focus on nursing, other healthcare professionals are welcome and would find the event of relevance to their work.
The conference site will be at Unity Village, a peaceful 1400 acres retreat center located 15 miles from downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The Mediterreanean-style campus features an award winning Rose Garden and two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
Full details about the event are contained in the conference brochure which can be accessed below. .
The science of complexity takes us to the threshold of a new relationship with the complex processes that define the context of our lives: the weather, the ecological systems on which we depend for clean air and food, and the social systems, organizations and economies within which we live and which we try to manage. Brian Goodwin and Peter Reason
