Joel Hodroff is the Founder and President of Minnesota- based DualCurrency Systems and an authority on the use of noncash incentives for commercial and economic development applications. Novel uses of the dual currency system include employee incentives for meeting company CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) benchmarks, volunteer and eco-sustainability incentives and incentives for youth to stay in school, get better grades and graduate. Joel has pioneered the concept of Sustainable Prosperity through Money Innovation, a strategy to marshal new economic resources without tax funding, higher debt or waiting for money to trickle down.

Joel was also selected an Innovator of the Year in 2005 by Minnesota’s Finance and Commerce newspaper. The genesis of DualCurrency Commerce was in his years as a commercial barter broker. There he began to design a method of blending B2B barter with C2C (individual to individual) barter into a system of large-scale B2C barter. He eventually integrated corporate scrip — money backed by products and services (such as customer loyalty rewards — into the model. The result of the blend is a highly versatile new financial instrument and a next generation payments platform. Joel has been a social entrepreneur for over 25 years, launching Solar Consultants, Inc. in 1983 and DualCurrency Systems in 1993. He is also a Founder and former Co-Chair of Responsible Minnesota Business, a Co-founder of the Global Sufficiency Network and a Facilitator of the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium. Joel urges leaders to advance the Triple Bottom Line in business (people, profits and the planet) and to model healthy balanced lifestyles. His work in DualCurrency Commerce is documented in The Future of Money by Bernard Lietaer, The New Alchemists by David Boyle, and the Japanese Public Television Documentary Ende’s Warning to the Future.
