Marilyn Ray and Marian Turkel are co-authors of a new book, Nursing, Caring and Complexity Science: For Human-Environment Well-Being, which the American Journal of Nursing selected for a book of the year award in 2011 in the category of professional development and issues. The book is dedicated to a third co-author, Alice Ware Davidson, one of the first nurses to study complexity science and nursing, who died before publication. Marilyn Ray, RN, PhD, CTN-A, professor emeritus at Florida Atlantic University, is known for her work in transcultural caring and her theory of bureaucratic caring, which integrates knowledge of human caring within complex technological, economic, legal and political systems in hospital organizations. She joined the U.S. Air Force in 1967 and held the rank of Colonel from 1984 to her retirement in 1999. In addition to numerous book chapters and journal articles, she is author of Transcultural Caring Dynamics in Health Care. Marian Turkel, RN, PhD, NEA0-BC, is director of professional nursing practice at Albert Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia and is on the faculty of Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI). In her position at Einstein, she advances Jean Watson’s theory of human caring and works to create a professional practice environment focusing on the tenets of complexity science related to innovation and transformation. In her work at WCSI, she helps various hospitals with practical applications of caring science, with emphasis on education, leadership, practice and research. She has written numerous book chapters and articles, and was elected president of the International Association for Human Caring in 2012.
