Why We Love Euphemisms
Guests: Ralph Keyes and Michael Monaghan
Author, speaker and teacher Ralph Keyes will discuss his latest book, Euphemania: Our Love Affair with Euphemisms. We like to say bad loans are nonperforming assets, and we’d rather misspeak than lie. Keyes maintains euphemisms help identify the things we’re afraid to talk about. And besides that, they’re ingenious, diversionary and sometimes hilarious. Keyes is the author of 16 books that deal with issues ranging from time pressures to human height. His bestseller Is There Life After High School? was made into a Broadway musical that is still produced in this country and abroad. Since its 1995 publication his book The Courage to Write has become a standard work among aspiring writers in particular. His interest in language, memory and faulty information led him to write The Quote Verifier: Who Said What, Where, and When. He is co-author of The Innovation Paradox: The Success of Failure, the Failure of Success which presents the view that success and failure and an interdependent, complementary pair. That recognition, according to the book, reflects a willingness to take risks, and innovation can’t happen without risk. Michael Monaghan is a veterinarian and former dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at University College Dublin in Ireland. He raised the funds for and supervised the design and construction of a new veterinary school on the Belfield campus. His experience as dean and as chair of the advisory committee to the Minister for Agriculture during the 2001 Foot-and-Mouth Disease epidemic, provoked his interest in ‘ordinary conversation' as a crucial part of the dynamics of organizational life.
