Where Good Ideas Come From by Steven Johnson

How do world-changing ideas emerge? And what environments are most likely to produce them? This month we'll explore ideas from the current Plexus Book Group selection, Steven Johnson's latest book Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovationand discover some provocative examples from history, physical science, culture, biology, and the world of nature. We often think great ideas come from individual geniuses having flashers of inspiration, but Johnson argues that's mostly myth. He writes that innovations have happened through out history when seven identifiable patterns coincided with unusually fertile environments. "The more we embrace these patterns - in our private work habits and hobbies, in our office environments, in the design of new software tools - the better we will be at tapping our extraordinary capacity for innovative thinking," Johnson writes. Come participate in some exercises designed to explore some of the patterns Johnson identifies and engage in a lively conversation facilitated by Plexus President, Lisa Kimball, about possible applications to your work.

We're also talking about this book (and many other things) online. Come join us in the Exploring Complexity Learning Community.
