Lean and Positive Deviance: Perfect Together or Irreconcilable Differences?

Guests: Sharon Benjamin and Deanna Suskovich

Lean Enterprise Institute - What is Lean

Lean is a change process that encourages a management goal of highest value for the customer and the elimination of waste through out an entire system rather than seeking to optimize separate departments and technologies. The idea is that by identifying and maintaining focuson value in each step of an organization's work, the organization can create processes that produce the best results with less human effort, less capital and less time. Positive Deviance (PD) is a behavior change process based on the belief that in every community there are individuals and groups who solve problems better than peers with the same resources. Once those successful practices are discovered, they will be accepted by a whole community more readily than directives imposed from the outside. Both approaches rely on small tests of measurable change for improvement. This and other similarities provide opportunities and confusion. Sharon Benjamin, PhD, is principal of Alchemy, a Washington DC based management consulting practice. She is a seasoned organizational executive who has served as a CEO and directed institutional development and finance. Her positions have included Vice President for Marketing for the Rails to-Trails Conservancy in DC and Director for Major Gifts for the Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge MA. She has been active in the non-profit community, and is an experienced coach who has used both Lean and PD in initiatives to help hospitals reduce health care associated infections. Deanna Suskovich, president of the Ancerra Corporation, a health care consulting firm, is a black belt in Six Sigma and Lean Management, and is working toward a masters' degree in health care management. She is also an experienced coach, who has used PD in health care improvement work in combination with other change processes
